jen the writer

I worked and interned for fine art institutions and non-profit organizations before becoming a professional journalist and writer. I currently spend my days writing articles for a number of news publications and assisting businesses, non-profits and individuals with their websites, marketing & publicity projects, and other types of communications.

My published works have appeared in magazines, newspapers and free journals, art exhibition guides, websites, blogs, marketing brochures, and annual newsletters. I received an M.A. in art history from Indiana University, after completing my B.A. in anthropology and art history at the University of Michigan.

What do you write? I am confident writing about anything, just as long as I am not totally clueless about the subject matter. For example, I have the skill to review a Smithsonian exhibition on airplanes, but I admit I would be lost writing a text book on the science of aerodynamics. My academic studies in the social sciences and the humanities have made me a quick observer of human behavior, politics, and history, and I am trained in an extensive range of interviewing techniques. A browse through my portfolio will give you the best sense of my experience and current interests. I have additional writing samples that are not posted on this website. Please do not hesitate to phone or email to keep posted on what I am working on.

Where do you work? I'm all over the place, actually. I work remotely, chase down stories where they happen and frequently fall asleep next to my laptop. I will consider working on your in-house projects and attending meetings, depending on the nature of the project. I'm based in Ann Arbor, MI and willing to travel short distances without additional compensation. Longer distances require fair reimbursement for gas, lodging, and fees for events, when applicable.

How do we work together? An initial conversation will give you a sense of my approach to writing, my work style, and my cost. If it seems like a good fit, then we can get down to the finer points of business. The first step is simply getting in touch.
