SoFA Gallery Celebrates its 20th anniversary with
music, art
By Jennifer Eberbach Reprinted from The Herald Times. (Bloomington, IN). August 16, 2007 The SoFA
Gallery features contemporary works by significant regional, national, and international artists, as well as works created
by faculty and students within the Hope School of Fine Arts. The gallery supplements its rigorous visual arts programming
with special performances, lectures, tours, and educational events. The gallery presents group shows, solo exhibitions, juried
shows, traveling exhibitions, and auctions, which highlight artistic endeavors that are relevant to contemporary discourse
on art and culture.
Fall 2007 season opens September 1st, with a
fundraiser celebrating the gallery’s 20th anniversary. Club SoFA will feature live
music by Bloomington bands, Coyaba, Alarmists (Calm Down.), and Kentucky Nightmare, and a dance party with Flufftronix, from
10 pm – midnight. Visitors can also enjoy yard games like corn hole, Wii competitions, sports on TV, food and refreshments.
Funds from admission tickets and donations to the gallery will ensure that the SoFA is able to continue its ongoing schedule
of exhibitions and events.
The gallery’s first major exhibition of the season,
TIMELAPSE, will highlight progress and change and investigate the concepts of time and space. From September 7 – October
5, works on display will focus on a working and changing environment in the gallery space. Several artists featured in the
exhibition will alter their works during gallery hours, giving patrons opportunities to see time-based works in action. An
Opening Reception on Friday, September 7, and a Closing Reception on Friday, October 5, from 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm will
give visitors a chance to see how the works have progressed or transformed over the month long period.
During
October and November, IU Fine Arts will be a haven for fans of jewelry and holloware. The SoFA Gallery will host Field
of Vision: Contemporary Jewelry and Holloware, which will be on display October 12 – November 17. This major exhibition
will feature works created by national and international artists, and will include an accompanying symposium with a workshop
and lectures by international artists Julie Blyfield and Robert Baines. Works created by IU Fine Arts Metalsmithing and Jewelry
Design faculty artist Nicole Jacquard will also be on display in the gallery during this time. Jacquard uses computer-aided
design and machining, including Rapid Prototyping, in order to create cup forms that investigate “ceremony,” as
“personal objects or souvenirs.” Patrons can also viewSculpture Transformed: The Work of Marjorie Schick in
the IU Art Museum’s Special Exhibitions gallery, from October 6 - December 17, 2007.
The SoFA Gallery is pleased to announce
